Whilst other alternative options in search have stayed tied to one or two Big Tech indexes, we’ve continued to plug away on our mission to provide the world with a true alternative in search, one which doesn’t require a relationship with a company that doesn’t share our perspective on a multitude of different issues. Critically, this means that when you search on Mojeek, even if you see an a contextual ad from our alpha testing programme and click on it, you are providing no support to a company whose business model is based on harvesting the data of its users, tagging them with aspects of their history and demographics, and selling access to this package off to the highest bidder.
As we have always said, the size of the Mojeek index affects the quality of results that we are able to surface for any given query; we have already indexed a considerable number of pages, but there will always be more data out there for us to add into our ever-growing repository of answers to questions, interesting articles, and hidden gems. To our knowledge this is still the largest index of its kind, the biggest collection of pages that has ever been amassed by a search engine that does not engage in user tracking. Mojeek has not tracked users from the start, having made a public commitment to that in 2006, a commitment that we understand was also the first of its kind.
The size of the Mojeek index is, however, not the only thing which determines the quality of results that you get for any given query. We are always in need of your feedback. Please let us know when you notice an area we could improve in via the Feedback Button on the results page, or by using this contact form. We very much appreciate your input.
We also have recently launched a Discourse-based community for those who want to find more ways to get more involved in the process of building the world’s alternative search engine, and a non-tracking newsletter for those who’d prefer to just hear from us once every month or so. This process is one that we cannot undertake alone, and we appreciate the ability to engage with you more deeply about Mojeek, as well as dropping new functionality and updates directly into your inbox.
