a speech bubble representing the Mojeek Discourse

Relying on and thus encouraging the use of Silicon Valley-led networks, such as Twitter and Reddit, in order to spread our message and interact with people who are interested in Mojeek does not fit ideally with us, our users and supporters. We understand that it is necessary to be in these places in order to communicate with people, but what about those who have no interest in handing over all of that information on what they do online to privacy-washing Big Tech companies?

On top of this, so much of the interaction that takes place on these networks is built to increase dwell time and accrue ad revenue. These spaces are not built for constructive discourse, instead priming users for using controversial and punchy lines, over deep and thoughtful discussion. This is in contrast with much of what we’ve done over the years at Mojeek where we practice deliberate and conscientious consideration of design and business choices.

To this end, we’ve decided to create a new space, one which allows for a deeper connection with us and what we do. The Mojeek community, launched today, is a place where you can actively engage with the development of the world’s alternative search engine through directly asking the team questions, suggesting functionality, engaging with other users, and discussing your challenges in searching for information on the open internet.

For this community we are using Discourse, an open source Internet forum software application. You can sign-up to the community with a social sign-up or by email. The former for the convenience that some of you may prefer. For privacy and in order to completely avoid Big Tech you can use email, which we will only use for community communications with you. If you are seeking total privacy you can use a burner email address. Just as in Mojeek search we do not keep any information that can identify you, such as your IP address.

A big number of you have asked how you can help us, so one way you can do so is by joining this community and writing or responding to a post. We look forward to seeing you there. Join us, and together we can continue to build the world’s alternative search engine.
